On May 30, 2024 we celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christi, the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Eucharist. This Feast day should give us great pause to meditate on why our Lord sits at the right hand of God yet has not left us orphans after His Ascension to Heaven.
First consider that God created all things out of love for us in order that we might live with Him eternally. When we and earth pass away, where will we find ourselves? Since we did not create ourselves, our eternal destiny is of serious consequence that depends on our answer to the Father’s will, calling us to follow Christ and receive His precious body and blood in the Most Holy Eucharist in order to unite ourselves to Christ’s Divinity in every way in line with God’s Providence.
Let us begin with thinking about the innocence of a child born with original sin. They require immediate attention to remove that defect for securing the eternal destiny of that innocent child. The Sacrament of Baptism grafts the child to Christ, removing original sin. But as the child grows to the age of reason his innocence is gradually diminished by the misuse of his free will in this fallen world. We are dependent on God and His infused graces received through the Sacraments of the Church, for continued health and wellbeing of our spiritual life with Him, in Him and through Him.
The ultimate goal in the Christian life is to be guided to the Source and Summit of our faith, the Sacrament of Holy Communion, the real presence of Corpus Christi, because “God Himself wills it, in other words to give us His complete substance as the God-Man, making Himself the bread of our supernatural life, the Bread of our union with Him” (Divine Intimacy by Father Gabriel). In this way, we live the abundant life and begin a foretaste of Heaven on earth. “What more can a soul wish for when it has within itself the One who contains everything.” (Saint Mary Magdalen dei Pazzi)
